Daphnia: Development of a Model Organism in Ecology and Evolution

Winfried Lampert

Max-Planck-Institut für Evolutionsbiologie (formerly MPI für Limnologie), Postfach 165, 24302 Plön, Germany

Recipient of the International Ecology Institute (ECI) Prize 2006 in limnetic ecology

Professor Winfried Lampert (Plön, Germany) is the recipient of the ECI Prize 2006 in limnetic ecology. He was elected by a Jury of the International Ecology Institute chaired by Professor Nelson G. Hairston, Jr. (Ithaca, NY, USA). Winfried Lampert's focus on adaptive evolution in the functioning of plankton populations and his choice of Daphnia as a model organism, as well as his success in conducting rigorous laboratory experiments with this key species, have shaped international research on lakes over the past four decades. The two ‘plankton towers’ which Lampert installed at the Max Planck Institute for Limnology in Plön, and his flow-through culture systems, set standards in the experimental study of zoo- and phytoplankton dynamics. Lampert’s leadership and service to the scientific community have been recognized with the Einar Naumann-August Thienemann medal of the International Society of Limnology (SIL), among other honors.

EE Book 21 summarizes decades of work by Winfried Lampert and his colleagues on the evolutionary adaptations that determine the composition of plankton communities. The author illustrates changes in paradigms over the years, reviews ecological and evolutionary theory, and highlights the importance of Daphnia for the biological functioning of lakes. Finally, he also emphasizes the perspectives for future research afforded by the recent publication of the Daphnia genome.
