Professor Maciej Gliwicz was elected by the ECI Jury chaired by Professor Winfried Lampert (Max-Planck-Institut für Limnologie, Plön, Germany), for his outstanding contributions to the field of plankton ecology, in particular regarding the interactions between phyto- and zooplankton and the mechanisms of top-down and bottom-up control. Born in Warsaw, Poland, Maciej Gliwicz obtained his Ph.D. in 1969 from the University of Warsaw, which always remained his base, while he also conducted research in Panama, USA, Portugal, Mozambique and Germany, as well as in Poland's Mazurian Lake Region. Maciej Gliwicz is now Director of the Department of Hydrobiology of the University of Warsaw.
