Aerial infrared thermography (IRT) video (using a white-hot color palette) of a skim-feeding North Atlantic right whale (NARW, Eubalaena glacialis) demonstrating the unique peri-callosity heat loss pattern of the dorsal rostrum as well as heat anomalies when blowholes are open during respirations (e.g., at timestamps 01:38, 02:54, and 03:24). The inset shows visible-spectrum (RGB) video obtained simultaneously. Note that the IRT camera was gimballed and oriented differently than the RGB camera, which was fixed facing downward. This NARW was photo-identified as a Catalog ID# 4540, a 5-year-old female (Identification Database of the North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium). Recording date: 27 April 2018, Flight #07
Video S2 – Thermal flukeprints (47.2 MB)
Aerial infrared thermography (IRT) video (using a white-hot color palette) providing an overview of the thermal flukeprints generated by at least two North Atlantic right whales (Eubalaena glacialis) subsurface traveling from right to left. Recording date: 28 April 2018, Flight #01
Video S3 – Anomalous dorsal heat signature (42.9 MB)
Aerial infrared thermography (IRT) video (using a white-hot color palette) of a skim-feeding North Atlantic right whale (NARW, Eubalaena glacialis) demonstrating an anomalous heat signature on its dorsum. See the main text for explanations for this anomalous heat signature, which is most visible between timestamps 0:42-2:01. Also note the cooler thermal flukeprints and wake upwelled by the NARWs as they travel and skim-feed. The inset shows visible-spectrum (RGB) video obtained simultaneously. Note that the IRT camera was gimballed and oriented differently than the RGB camera, which was fixed facing downward. The NARW with the anomalous heat signature was photo-identified as a Catalog ID# 2791, an adult female that was observed approximately 8 months later with a newborn calf (Identification Database of the North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium). The second, smaller NARW in this video was not identified. Recording date: 28 April 2018, Flight #01
